Prof. Jitendra B. Naik, India

Dr. J. B. Naik, Professor and Head, Department of Chemical Engineering at North Maharashtra University, received his Ph.D. in 1999 from North Maharashtra University Jalgaon, India. Duringthe period January 1998 to July 2008 he was a faculty member of University Department of Chemical Technology, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.

Dr. Naik is working on the development of controlled/sustained released micro/nano particles for anti-diabetic, antihypertensive and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, taste masking of bitter drugs, development of biocompatible polymers and polyelectrolyte (anti-scaling agents), synthesis of polymer composites for different gas sensing applications. He has publishedmore than ninety research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as filled eight Indian patents so far. With the valuable guidance and encouragement of Prof. Arun Mujumdar, Dr.Naik is started collaborative research workfrom this year.

Dr. Naik is reviewer of various international journals such as; Drug Delivery, Journal of Microencapsulation, Powder Technology, Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation, Journal of Materials Science & Engineering, Advance Powder Technology, Advance Polymer Technology, Pharmaceutical Development and Technology.

Dr. Naik has completed many government projects based on nanoparticulate drug delivery systemsponsored by University Grants Commission, Department of Science and Technology (Nano-mission) and Defence Research and Development Organization, New Delhi as well as development of different polyelectrolyte sanctioned by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi,India. Additionally, he is a coordinator of Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP-II) sponsored by Word Bank and MHRD, New Delhi and Special Assistance Program sponsored by UGC, New Delhi

We are currently investigating photonic sludge treatment based on thin film technology. This method allows us to carry out simultaneous sludge drying and stabilization (organic reduction). Another goal of the study is reducing the priority organic pollutant content of sludge, creating an alternative to incineration plants for industrial plants. Our study was nominated by Eni Award Secreteriat for 2016. The Eni Award was created to develop better use of renewable energy, promote environmental research and encourage new generations of researchers. The Award, which is annual, highlights the critical importance increasingly given by Eni in recent years to scientific research and issues of sustainability.

Dr Xu Peng, Jiliang University, Hangzhou, China

  1. Dr. Peng XU has been working in McGill University as a visiting professor from June 25, 2015 to December 24, 2015. He has conducted research on several projects including impinging jets,tree-like networks and hydrocyclone with Dr. Agus P. Sasmito and Prof. Arun S. Mujumdar.
  2. Dr. Peng XU and Dr. Agus P. Sasmito visited Prof. Arun S. Mujumdar at Toronto in November 7-8, 2015, and discussed several ongoing projects and planned future collaboration.
  3. Dr. Peng XU is preparing two review papers on tree-like network and gas impinging jet with Dr. Agus P. Sasmito and Prof. Arun S. Mujumdar.

From Dr. Agus P. Sasmito, McGill University, Montreal Canada

  1. After 1.5 years as Research Fellow with M3TC and another 1.5 years as post-doctoral researcher in Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi, Agus has joined the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering, McGill University as Assistant Professor since January 2014. He is now establishing Mine Ventilation, Energy and Environment (MVE2) lab and research group.
  2. Agus is working together with Prof. Ferri Hassani of McGill and Prof. Mujumdar on a joint project in Energy extraction from underground mines. Prof Arun Mujumdar is now Adjunct Professor in Mining Engineering as well as Bioresource Engineering at McGill and Chemical Engineering at Western University, London, Ontario.  
  3. Agus together with Dr. Peng Xu, Dr. Booming Yu, Dr. J. Chai and Dr Sachin is editing special issue on "Transport Phenomena in Porous Media and Fractal Geometry" in Journal of Chemistry. Potential authors may visit http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jchem/si/945065/cfp/ for details..

From Dr. Sachin Jangam, National University of Singapore, Singapore

  1. After 3.5 years as Research Fellow with M3TC, Sachin has joined the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of NUS as Lecturer.
  2. An extended abstract on "Research project based learning (RPBL) in higher education" has been submitted to the forthcoming International Conference on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE2014) organized by CDTL, National University of Singapore.   3. Sachin Jangam will deliver a keynote lecture on "Advances in Food Drying - Quality aspects and energy considerations" during forthcoming ISPFVF 2014 organized by The University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus. For more details about this symposium Click Here.
  4. Sachin is working with Prof. Benu Adhikari and Prof. Arun Mujumdar on a chapter entitled "Drying - Physical and Structural Changes" for Encyclopedia of Food and Health.
  5. Sachin is also working with Prof Arun Mujumdar on a chapter entitled "New developments in food dehydration" for a book entitled “Dehydration of Food Products”, being undertaken by NIFTEM as an out come of 1st Workshop on Dehydration of Food and Agricultural Products (Principles, Practices and prospects) held at NIFTEM during 25-26 March 2014.
  6. The Organizing committee of The 5th Sriwijaya International Seminar on Energy-Environmental Science and Technology (SISEEST 2014), Indonesia has invited Sachin as a keynote speaker.

  1. The 1st volume of ebook "Mathematical modeling of industrial transport processes " (ISBN: 978-981-08-6269-5) can be download  free of charge on TPR group website. The 2nd volume is in preparation.
    Potential authors are invited to send proposals by writing the title and a short summary of proposed chapter.
  2. For the pulsed impinging jet, the 2D case with single jet has been completed and 2 journal papers have been published. 3D and multi-jet cases are being simulated using CFD.  
  3. For the transport properties of tree-like network, the optimation according to the transport properties has been focussed on, and a review paper about this topic is being prepared.

From Meng Wai Woo, Monash, Australia

  1.  Volume one of e-book on spray drying, co-editored by Meng Wai Woo, Prof. Wan Ramli and Prof.Mujumdar, is now completed.  This volume contains 8 chapters which were contributed by diverse groups of researchers active in this area.  The download link for this free e-book (ISBN: 978-981-08-6270-1) will be available soon on the TPR website.
  2. In the spray drying area,  Meng Wai is currently investigating the concept of a low velocity spray tower using the CFD technique.   
  3. He is also developing a numerical scheme in FLUENT to model the transient growth behaviour of fouling layers in processes.

TPR is delighted to note that Prof.Min Zhang of Jiangnan University and a long term collaborator of our Group has received the following two major awards in this month (January 2010).

First prize for the outstanding university-industry collaborative work by his drying research group from the Chinese MInistry of Commerce from among 123 candidate projects. Prof.Mujumdar has been associated with this group and now the Pepsico-JU Institute since 2003 and 2006, respectively.

They also received the major Jiangsu Province Prize for our outstanding work in scientific and technological R&D.

  1. Meng Wai had just submitted his PhD thesis in July. His PhD thesis was on spray drying which involved both experimental and CFD work, looking at the deposition and stability phenomenon in the process. He is now awaiting the final thesis defense which is expected to be in November 2009.
  2. Meng Wai is currently on a short research visit at the University of Sydney with Dr. Tim Langrish's group. During his visit, he is undertaking some experiments related to the scaling up of in-process crystallization in spray dryers. He will also be doing some CFD modelling work on spray dryers.
  3. Work is already in progress to produce an e-book on spray drying. This e-book will be co-editored by Meng Wai Woo, Prof. Wan Ramli and Prof.Mujumdar. Some of the chapters currently confirmed, which will be contributed by re-known workers in the field, includes: Manipulations of physical properties in spray drying, in-process crystallization control, stickiness and deposition, recent development in spray drying, CFD modelling of spray dryers, spray drying of milk, modelling of liquid atomization, chracterization of milk powders.

From Prof. Min Zhang, Jiangnan University, China

  1. Prof. Min Zhang and his colleagues of Jiangnan University , Food Science Department, Wuxi , China , have been active research collaborators of the TPR Group led by Prof. Mujumdar of NUS Mechanical Engineering Department. The focus has been on drying of various foods ranging from marine products to vegetables to fruits. Various drying technologies have been explored successfully mainly via extensive experimentation. A large number of co-advised PhD students have completed their theses at Jiangnan under joint supervision. A large number of archival journal papers have also been published.
  2. Prof. Mujumdar visited Jiangnan University in Wuxi April 27=30, 2009. He presented a 2 hour seminar on recent developments in food drying. Postgraduate students at Jiangnan presented in detail their recent research results on freeze and MW freeze drying of vegetables and fruits. Following is a list of the outcome of the successful and productive collaboration which has been going on continuously over the past seven years. Pepsico R&D, USA , is providing support for some of the research activities now in progress. A Jianganan-Pepsico Institute has been formed which we expect will lead to contributions to both basic and applied R&D in drying using MW at cryogenic conditions.

A keynote lecture on "Recent Developments in Drying of Foods" was presented by Dr Law C.M. of University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus, at the 2008 International Symposium on Innovations in Food Processing on 20 Nov 2008 at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) ,Taiwan .

Earlier, another keynote lecture on "Energy Aspect s in Industrial Drying" was presented by Dr. Law at the Sriwijaya International Seminar on Energy Science and Technology, SISEST 2008 on 5-6 November 2008 at Sriwijaya University, Palembang, Indonesia. This seminar was organised by Rusnas PEBT, Sriwijaya University. Dr. Law presented the paper at the seminar that attracted over 100 participants. Paper reference number is KS-06 in the abstract proceedings.
