Dr. Ching Lik Hii, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus
- Dengue is a life-threatening disease caused by the Aedes mosquito and no specific cure is available to date. The global incidence of dengue has grown dramatically in the last few decades due to factors such as changing weather patterns and rapid urbanization. In some countries, papaya leaf juice is a traditional remedy used to treat dengue. It contains a bioactive ingredient called carpaine which can help to increase platelet production in patients upon consumption of the juice. My current work aims to find the best way to preserve carpaine in the dried leaf and also to investigate how storage over prolonged periods affects the potency and stability of carpaine. The work is sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia (Fundamental Research Grant Scheme).

- We are currently investigating photonic sludge treatment based on thin-film technology. This method allows us to carry out simultaneous sludge drying and stabilization (organic reduction). Another goal of the study is reducing the priority of organic pollutant content of sludge, creating an alternative to incineration plants for industrial plants. Our study was nominated by Eni Award Secretariat for 2016. The Eni Award was created to develop better use of renewable energy, promote environmental research and encourage new generations of researchers. The Award, which is annual, highlights the critical importance increasingly given by Eni in recent years to scientific research and issues of sustainability.
Our recent research results are published in the following selected publications:
